Well, they're not exactly what I expected - I think Lea put it best when she referred to them as the Dave Chapelle Show of birthing classes.
First of all, it is not a small class. Fifty of us pregnant ladies and our 'coaches' gather every Tuesday & Thursday night for two hours in an auditorium, where our instructor proceeds to 'teach' us about all things labor, delivery and postpartum. What her instruction lacks in brevity, it makes up for in humor. Redundancy could be her middle name, but perhaps its necessary given the audience - forgetful pregnant women and typically their not-so-enthused-husbands.
Things that I like about the class:
1. It gets me out of the house twice a week and because I have such a good friend to accompany me - Thank you, Lea - I look forward to it.
2. Our instructor knows a lot about baby birthing and that's obvious. Any questions I may have, especially with the Womack system, I know will be answered fully.
3. It makes me laugh!
4. I'm surrounded by lots of other pregnant women which is comforting for some reason. Unspoken understanding and all that...
Things the instructor has said at every class:
1. "You need to drop it like it's hot to get that baby out." (This phrase is often accompanied with a signature 'drop it like it's hot' move best described as a 'sexy' lunge.)
2. "You wanna get that baby out? Ya'll need to go home and do what you did to get that baby in there in the first place."
3. " You need to go home and what? Repeat after me, Have Sex." (She really does make us repeat after her...)
4. "All y'all natural birth granolas gonna just fart that little cornbread out."
(Email for translation...)
All in all, it's been a positive experience so far but certainly not the small group setting I was expecting. I am very grateful, therefore, for the two-hour, one-on-one labor & delivery session with Kristen's Mom, Betty, who gave me a lot of very relevant information that I will definitely use to get this little guy out. Thanks, Betty!
My next prenatal appointment is Tuesday at 1pm. I'll be almost at 38 weeks at that point and will hopefully find out Case's presentation and whether or not I'm dilated yet, as well as the results for the Group B Strep test. The other thing that's really exciting about Tuesday is that I just found out my husband is arriving home early (originally he was supposed to arrive next Saturday) if all the flights go as planned! If exclamation points could convey how excited I am, I'd fill the whole blog with them! Big big week!!!
